Region:
In Yirgacheffe agriculture is based on traditional methods. Although coffeeproduction is one of the most lucrative, the farms also produce other vegetablesand fruits. Due to the landscape, the coffee cherries are picked by hand and nochemicals are used. The capital of the region is also called Yirgacheffe and themost symbolic natural attraction is the Bonga Mountain. Yirgacheffe is home tomany members of the gedeo ethnic group who are famous for their coffee-makingtraditions.
Washing Station:
The Beloya washing station lies in the Kochere District; just northof Chelelektu, and 45km from Dilla, the administrative centre ofthe Gedeo Zone. The washing station itself has two processingunits to ensure a timely washing and drying of the cherry, usingwater from the local river system. Smallholder farmers in thehills surrounding the washing station will bring their cherryhere to be processed, cupped, and sold; the station itself has beenaround for over twenty five years, but has recently been bought andexpansion and improvement works are underway.
